The Caribbean Heart Health blood pressure checkup event took place on Friday, July 5th, 2023, at 1100 Fife Street. This event was organized as part of the Caribbean Heritage Month celebration in collaboration with The Council of Caribbean Organization of Manitoba. The primary objective of the event was to raise awareness about the importance of understanding blood pressure and promoting heart health within the community.
The event featured two prominent doctors, both from St Boniface hospital; Dr. Pramjit Tappia, (Clinical Research Associate), and Dr. Bram Ramjiawan, (Director of Research Innovation and Regulatory Affairs at Asper Clinical Research Institute), both who are also Adjunct Professors at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. They delivered an informative session highlighting the significance of understanding blood pressure and its impact on overall health. Attendees gained valuable insights and received education on maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. A detailed graphic representation was displayed by Dr Ramjiawan to enhance understanding and facilitate engagement among the attendees. The event witnessed a significant turnout from the Manitoba community, comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Dr. Sandra Sukhan, a staunch member of the Canada Caribbean Heart Health Education (CHHE) and the Honorary Consul for Guyana to Manitoba, played a vital role in the event. She delivered a powerful slide show showcasing various events and initiatives undertaken by the foundation. Laura Marrast, also from CHHM, provided valuable assistance to Dr. Sandra Sukhan in coordinating the event.
The success of the event was made possible through the collaboration and generous sponsorship from Kamta Roy Singh and Tim Horton’s. Their support enabled the provision of rich delicacies during the session, contributing to a delightful experience for the attendees. The Caribbean Heart Health: Blood Pressure Checks event was highly appreciated by the attendees, as evidenced by the numerous questions and expressions of satisfaction from the members. The event’s success has created a desire for a follow-up event in the near future to further address the importance of blood pressure management and heart health.
Special appreciation to Kamta Roy Singh, Dr. Paramjit Tappia, Dr. Bram Ramjiawan, and Dr. Sandra Sukhan for their invaluable contributions made. Their expertise, dedication, and support played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the event.
